Corks do a lot of peculiar things as they age with your precious wine. In storage that is a little too dry they can become brittle, and a regular corkscrew will just drill a hole in the middle and leave you pulling out little cork bits and cork dust. A mess. On the other hand, a fully soaked old cork can come out like cake mix, and if you use an “ah-so” opener (superior to a waiter’s friend for such corks) you risk pushing that sort of cork into the bottle as you attempt to get the two prongs down the side.
