This evening’s dinner with Allen Meadows focuses on the 1er Cru vineyards of Vosne-Romanée. Driving
up the D974, and this smart but quiet village comes into view, its gentley sloping vineyards and small
cluster of limestone buildings look unassuming. But this commune is home to the most coveted, and
many of the most alluring Burgundy reds of all, it’s grand crus – like La Romanée-Conti, La Romanée,
Richebourg and Romanée-St-Vivant, to name a few, are amongst the regions true icons, wines of dreams.
But Vosne is home to more than this, as Allen made clear in his 2010 book devoted entirely to this village
and its wines – The Pearl of the Côte: The Great Wines of Vosne-Romanée. To really understand Vosne,
we must understand each of its 1er Cru vineyards. They provide the tapestry of terroirs through which we
can understand the expression of Vosne as a whole. We have further narrowed down this patchwork of
identities by focusing on one single highly regarded vintage, now with some maturity in bottle – 2016.
Over dinner at Upper House, guided by the man who wrote the book on Vosne-Romanée, we will gain
intimate portraits on these thirteen 1er Cru terroirs. A masterclass dinner to remember.
