One of the most exciting developments in fine wine is taking place in one of the world’s most traditional wine regions – Champagne. The successful ‘house’ system, in which thousands of growers support major famous brands with their grapes, and complex blends are created to ensure year-on-year product consistency to a house style continues to reign supreme.
But beneath that surface a small but important revolution is taking place. Growers are retaining at least some of their grapes, to make artisanal-scale, often single-vintage, and sometime single-varietal Champagnes that are specific to single parcel terroirs. We saw this transition in Burgundy years ago, and it allowed us there to see so much more nuance in what the land can reveal.
At The Fine Wine Experience we are really excited by this, and in recent years our import portfolio of small Champagne estates has grown. We thought it would be a fun and illuminating way to spend an evening to explore them over dinner.
