Join us this evening for a Burgundy masterclass with Jasper Morris who will join the event in person.
Jasper Morris is a Master of Wine, author of the indispensable reference book – Inside Burgundy: The 2nd Edition, winner (like the first edition) of the André Simon prize, and Burgundy-dedicated website, Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy. As a UK specialist importer he shipped his first burgundies in 1981, retiring from the trade in 2017 to devote himself full time to the task of Burgundy writer and critic. Jasper brings charm, wit, not to mentioned 40 years of experience and expertise to this evening’s masterclass topic.
And our topic this evening is Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru – a selection from the more fruit-forward 2017 vintage so we can eliminate vintage variation and focus on the eight producers. An unusual feature of Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is that the name can also apply to wines made from fruit from neighbouring Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru, or from a blend of the two vineyards. When this is taken into account, it is a large heterogenous grand cru, and quality can vary, though there are some gems. Denis Bachelet’s, Claude Dugat’s, and Perrot-Minot’s are 100% from Charmes-Chambertin fruit. Amiot-Servelle’s and Tortochot’s are 100% from Mazoyères-Chambertin, and labelled Charmes-Chambertin. Armand Rousseau’s is a blend 0.51ha Charmes, 0.86ha Mazoyères, while Dujac’s is 0.31ha Charmes and 0.39ha Mazoyères, and both are labelled as Charmes-Chambertin. All of which can be unpacked and discussed at this evening’s masterclass.
