While the art of great Champagne is to blend – grape varieties, villages, and vintages to produce a harmonious and consistent style, there are some rare exceptions. Philipponnat’s ‘Clos des Goisses’ is a 5.83ha walled vineyard monopole located in Mareuil-sur-Äy in the Vallée de la Marne. Walled vineyards often indicate the pinnacle of quality – and here we find a beautiful pure south-facing steep (45º) chalky slope, planted to 2/3 Pinot Noir and 1/3 Chardonnay.
It produces a vintage Champagne of great richness, power, minerality, and longevity. It’s full-bodied (requiring very low dosage), and a great food Champagne. So, this evening, join us at Prohibition, for a vertical tasting dinner of 9 vintages to discover the character and style of this great Champagne.
