Domaine Hudelot-Noellat one of the top Burgundy producer trace its origins back to 1962. Founded by Alain Hudelot, he ran the estate for 45 years. In 1978, he married Odile Noëllat (granddaughter of Charles Noëllat), this union brought new vineyard in the Domain. 10 years later, in 1988, they added other vineyard to their holding: Domaine Hudelot was divided, half of it went to Domaine Leroy, Alain and Odile splitted the other half with Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron. 2007 was the last vintage of Alain Hudelot, he stepped down in 2008 to allow his grandson Charles Van Canneyt to take over, right after he completed his wine course at Dijon University.

This handover impulses evolution rather than revolution. The program implement: ploughed soils, producing lower yields, improve the process during harvest, include small percentage of whole bunch for the maceration. Charles Van Canneyt wanted to respect his grandfather vision: let the terroir express its emotions. That’s why he chose to be not interventionist and listen closely to the Nature before taking actions.

Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat is one of the 3 fortunate producers to have both Romanée-Saint-Vivant (0.5ha) and Richebourg (0.33ha), alongside Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and Domaine Leroy. Around the world, every top collector is looking for these two wines, it is also the case for his Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru ‘Les Malconsorts’ and Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru ‘Les Suchots’. However, Charles Van Canneyt offers great village wine with a very good ratio quality for the value. The domaine covers 10 hectares, spread over 4 villages and 15 appellations, its makes a wide and very interesting selection. Most of his plots have very old vines, planted in the 1930s’, 50s’.

When it comes to winemaking, Charles Van Canneyt is meticulous, he is paying attention to every details, drastic sorting, most of the bunches will be de-stemmed and go in concret tank. Then a cold maceration of 10 days will be done, followed by fermentation with natural yeast, few punching down and pumping over, with the last element being slow pressed, with limited extraction. For his Romanée-Saint-Vivant and Richebourg, from picking the grappes in the vineyard to casking, all those steps will be done the same way at the same time. Once you taste the wine, we can clearly see the difference of the terroir, like day and night. His oak usage suits well his wines, 20% new oak for village level wine, 30-50% for premiers crus and grands crus, the oak he selects come from French forest: Allier, Vosges and Citeaux.

According to Charles Van Canneyt, Richebourg is always more enjoyable during barrel tasting, but it closes down after bottling and will need few years to open-up again.
