We’re excited to be hosting the young and passionate Pierre-Vincent Girardin for a tasting in our shop on Monday, 25th November. If you are searching for rising stars in Burgundy, this guy is one to meet, and you definitely want to try his wines. You know what happened to the prices of Arnaud Ente, and you didn’t purchase them in time. We want you to be in on this star.
Florian, François and I tried the 2017 Bourgogne Blanc 'Éclat de Calcaire' and Volnay a month after they were bottled. And we were impressed, especially by the Bourgogne Blanc which had pleasing salinity and minerality. These are exactly the qualities I search for when I’m looking for a glass of white to drink with food.
Here were Florian’s impressions of the two wines:
2017 Bourgogne Blanc 'Éclat de Calcaire': Fresh and minerally wine with definition and precision. The vibrant acidity comes through immediately followed by salinity. Right after opening, there were reductive notes, but a few minutes later the wine showed brilliant aromas of white flowers and white peaches.
2017 Volnay: Juicy, fresh fruit on the palate with the right balance of acidity and minerality; these qualities make for an elegant wine. Speaking as a Volnay lover and someone who grew up there in a winemaking family, this wine is excellent Volnay.
Several of our team including Mike and Linden visited with Pierre-Vincent at his domaine in September during their harvest time. The team enjoyed tasting the wine then too when it was showing even better. So, we invited Pierre-Vincent to come visit us in Hong Kong to meet you and to offer you an opportunity to try his wines.
Pierre-Vincent Girardin is the son of Vincent Girardin and is the 13th generation of his family to make wine in Burgundy. His first vintage is 2017, so we’re honoured to be able to share these initial wines from Pierre-Vincent with you.
Pierre-Vincent’s style is a departure from his father’s, and the wines very much express Pierre-Vincent’s voice. The style is described well by Steen Öhman of the online website, Winehog, from his tasting with Pierre-Vincent Girardin, ‘He wants his wines to express the mineral side of Burgundy rather than producing overly concentrated and dense wines.’ (9 June 2019). If you like wines from Burgundy that express their terroir and are minerally driven, I encourage you to come join me on 25 November to meet Pierre-Vincent and to taste his wines.
