Located in Flagey-Echézeaux, the grand cru Echézeaux it is traditionally grouped together with the wines of neighbouring Vosne-Romanée. It is one of the most interesting and rewarding of the Côte de Nuit’s grand cru vineyards to explore, because it is large – 36.26 hectares, and comprising eleven lieux-dits (11 named vineyards inside Echézeaux), and has a large number of owners – over 50 in fact. Amongst them are some of the most famous and sought after names in all of Burgundy, such as Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (the largest owner, 4.67ha), Henri Jayer, and today his nephew Emmanuel Rouget, the much sought after Bizot, Comte Liger-Belair, Arnoux-Lachaux, Anne Gros, Mugneret-Gibourg, Dujac, and others. Viewing Echézeaux as a whole, a comparative tasting gives us the chance not only to learn about “Echézeaux”, but also to compare the differences in style between the leading producers. Also, because the terroirs of these eleven lieux-dits are actually quite diverse (especially comparing the more rocky up-slope to the more clay-ey down-slope), perhaps we can discover some of these differences in the wines too?

Although these days it has become an almost mythical opportunity to taste examples from Jayer or Bizot, such is the scarcity (and here is your opportunity!), Echézeaux is often one of the more affordable grand crus, easier to find too, and so a good one to know well. The fourteen examples at this evening’s dinner give us the chance to deepen our understanding and pleasure of Echézeaux grand cru. We hope you can join us.
