Hello, summer! It’s time to take out an ice bucket with this summer in Hong Kong feeling exceptionally hot. Why not open a bottle of white to enjoy in this muggy weather? A couple of weeks ago, I had a bottle of Leflaive Bâtard-Montrachet 1994. I was really lucky to have this famous bottle from such a back vintage and in perfect condition. Indeed, the bottle showed lovely aromas of popcorn, white peach, flowers and orange peel on the nose. It was complex, elegant, with a long finish. Just fantastic! A bottle of Etienne Sauzet Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru ‘Champ Gain’ 2018 I tried a few months ago was so milky, and citrusy, and a bit closed at the beginning. 45 minutes later those notes of stone fruit and mineral showed up, and became so round in the mouth.

Both estates produce the premiers crus from Les Folatières and Les Combettes. On the other hand, the premiers crus Les Pucelles, Clavoillon (and Meursault Sous le Dos d’Âne) are just in the Domaine Leflaive line up, while Champ Canet, Champ Gain, Hameau de Blagny, La Garenne, La Truffière and Les Perrières Premier Cru are just in Etienne Sauzet’s.

Leflaive’s wines are aged for 12 months in 25% new oak and are then transferred to steel tanks where they are allowed to clarify naturally over the second winter. Etienne Sauzet ages the wines on their lees for 10-12 months. The wine is left on the lees as long as possible in order to extract all the flavour and richness out of them. They are then fined and bottled.

Both estates are well known for producing high quality, delicate and elegant Burgundy whites, with good ageing potential and in an elegant style. They have small-scale productions, and with growing popularity their wines are becoming more difficult to find. One thing to note, since the 2011 vintage, all Domaine Leflaive bottles (except Mâcon-Verzé) wear a Prooftag authentication seal. You can check their website to authenticate your bottle.

We offer a great selection of wines from both domaines on our list. Come to get some before they're all gone, and beat the Hong Kong summer heat!
