Join us at this wine dinner event in Shanghai as we take a deep dive into the Burgundies of Gevrey-Chambertin, from village to grand cru, covering its key terroirs, its range of expressions, as well as their ‘Gevrey character’. Gevrey-Chambertin boasts the most Grand Cru vineyards (9 of them, 87.1 ha) in Côte de Nuits. Its pair of crown jewels, Chambertin Clos de Bèze, which claims the distinction of being Burgundy's oldest vineyard, dates back to AD 630, and Le Chambertin, renowned as the 'King of Burgundy', was adored by Napoleon.i
Gevrey-Chambertin hosts 26 1er Crus vineyards situated on the elevated western slopes of the village. Among these, Clos Saint-Jacques and Les Cazetiers stand out, frequently lauded for their remarkable quality akin to that of Grand Cru vineyards. Village level vineyards are found on the east & north side of the village.
Clive Coates MW described the wines of Gevrey-Chambertin as follows, 'a full and sturdy wine, rich and masculine, but with a touch of the fleshy and exotic.'ii
In terms of the identifying characteristics of Gevrey-Chambertin, for me, the wines are the most masculine of the villages in Burgundy with dark fruit notes, intensity, concentration, firm tannins, earthy qualities of forest floor and mushroom; they tend to be muscular wines and are wines of longevity. As we focus on this one village within Burgundy today, we will also talk about the difference between village level, premiers crus and grands crus wines, and you will be tasting wines from some of the most famous domaines in Gevrey-Chambertin as well as some that are on the rise. Gevrey-Chambertin is frequently described as the village that is the entry point into Burgundy for the Bordeaux drinker. Let’s see what you think of the wines of Gevrey-Chambertin.
