Burgundy reds are loved by many, defined by their elegance, medium body, vibrant food-friendly acidity, and smooth, silky tannins. While they are very enjoyable when young, matured Burgundies are even better. During cellaring, the wine doesn't just sit still—it evolves, quietly at first, and then with a noticeable payoff in the glass for those who have patience. One of the biggest benefits of prolonged aging is how it transforms sharp edges into harmony. Younger wines can sometimes feel tight, especially reds where tannins may taste grippy or even slightly bitter. Over time, those tannins soften and become more integrated, turning the wine’s texture from rough to refined. Instead of tasting like separate parts, everything starts to blend into a single, unified profile.

Properly aged wines are always highly sought-after by the market. Back-vintage Burgundy has become increasingly difficult to find, and prices have risen sharply over the past few years. With global demand heavily outstripping the limited supply of aged bottles, finding anything with 20 or more years of age can be a challenge. Luckily, our inventory at The Fine Wine Experience cellar is deep across all categories, allowing us to offer a great selection of 20-year-old Burgundies at HKD 2,000 or below. I have picked three highly interesting producers from our list that offer incredible value.

Domaine Gérard Raphet has a winemaking history spanning over a century. The estate is currently managed by the fourth generation of the family, Marion Raphet, who follows her father Gérard’s philosophy of crafting wines that let the old vines and their specific terroirs speak for themselves. Here, their century-old vines provide the foundation for producing high-quality fruit. Cultivation is pesticide-free, harvesting is done entirely by hand, and fermentation relies on indigenous yeasts in the cellar. The wines are bottled without filtration or fining. Their bottles remain an under-the-radar hidden gem—but likely not for long.

Pierre Bourée is another lesser-known (for now!) century-old estate, mainly because they sell most of their wines straight to the UK, US, and Japan. The vineyards are farmed organically, though without formal certification, and the grapes are hand-picked and meticulously sorted. Vinification often involves whole clusters, and the wines are aged in 10% to 20% new oak before undergoing a light filtration prior to hand-bottling. Bill Nanson, author of The Burgundy Report, commented, “Few people can craft wines like these; in terms of aromatics, the distinctive profile imparted by the stems evokes comparisons to l'Arlot or Dujac.” With some bottle age, these wines retain a beautiful concentration, elegance, and a silky texture. This is a style that truly rewards those with patience.

The last producer I want to share is Roche de Bellene, founded by Nicolas Potel. He was widely recognized for his authentic expressions of terroir and natural farming practices; by minimizing cellar intervention as much as possible, he allowed the unique character of the vineyards to reveal itself naturally. Potel was an early advocate for organics, managing vineyards in Volnay, Pommard, and Santenay under these principles since the 1990s. For him, respecting nature was a practice woven into every aspect of his life. Tragically, following his passing in 2025, Tim Atkin MW wrote, “Burgundy has lost a true genius.” Potel visited Hong Kong quite a few times and was well-known for a passionate, energetic, and direct personality that perfectly translated into his bottles.
To me, mature Burgundy is something truly special, and I hope the highlights below serve as an excellent starting point for you to explore. If you have any questions, need photos of the bottles, or would like advice on which wine to choose, please do reach out.
